Gaag is my first typeface. Gaag taught me how to design a typeface and helped me understand a letterform’s impact on the reader. By changing curve speed, terminal angle, joint widths, and stroke angle, I learned that small changes to form translated into large changes in tone. The stages of my letterform ‘g’ show this exploration; what started as a highly stylistic and loudly visible character transformed into a character that still had those traits in a much softer respect. To me, the edits I made to the letterform ‘g’ felt like zooming out from a disaster, but even from a distance, the anxiety seen closeup is still visible.
